Project 1
Down The Stairs
After the Crypt show, it was less confusing to materialise my context. I wanted to reconfigure the meaning of space and object for me. I recalled metaphysical objects of Giorgio De Chirico at Petcha-Kucha presentation: especially The Great Metaphysician. It looks like belonging to unheimlich atmosphere of space swinging by object and space. His objects carry the aura
I want to achieve but they are traditional and
heavy for me. About method, I want to keep
my process as simple as I cut and glue
pieces of paper. I want simple, spacious and
unidentified structure like Antony Caro’s work.

Furthermore, I planned series of work about my imagery in response to Poetics of space/Water and dreams.
The first space is about my impression when I move down the stairs. I was thinking of arranging several pieces of same structure but in growing form. I planned 2 meters height to convey the feeling of the passage to step into gradually lower level.
Since I've reduced action of painting, I decided not to use paint at all this time. So colour of material was in priority to start making. I found pieces of 9mm plywood which has been left in wood workshop for a long time.

I tried moderate size of structure with plywood as a pre-model for large work. Suddenly I liked their texture, colour and size. So I changed the plan to add more under the structure I already made. Added structure should not interrupt the main structure as support but should be part of the completed piece. It could be a shape of different level of shelves.
I spent more time to decide additional form than the main structure. The first sketch turned too spacious to weaken the main structure. Fortunately, I designed 2 parts for added structure to join together; I tried several possible options with found object.

It is often very difficult to decide confidently how to put my work together as a whole structure without losing my voice. Sometimes a little lingering affection to small thing changes entire process. It is not easy to see my work with fresh, unbiased eyes by myself.
Besides, I will keep my practice on visualising intimate spaces or my perception of space in abstract form inspired by Bachelard’s writings. I want to find a way to bring surreal atmosphere or a sense of mobility in my work. Limestone cave and stairs evoke more imagination when wonderer is moving into it. Thinking of mobility doesn't mean real moving structure like machine. I seek for the state of about-to-move with using the balance of structures.
