Artist Statement

My art practice is about dealing with space and object as a whole structure. My interest lies in the modulation of space in objects and extending into the surrounding space of them. It is triggered by space around me or on the way I walk, where I feel attached or detached.

In my perception, space is the capacity of the emptiness like Cezanne’s blank canvas to create space by piling up colours or an empty stage for building things. Space is about vacuum between edges of objects and the structure of places, or in the capacity around objects.

For that reason, objects are for defining the emptiness as space in my practice. Objects are more about structural form or organic figuration aroused from space, especially when it forms the attachment to space by artist’s memory, daydreaming or stimmung.

Gaston Bachelard’s text from Poetics of Space and Water and Dreams visualise my idea of space. I aim to create intimate but unfamiliar structure about a shelter of daydreaming or imagery of subterranean world: the places beginning from my early memory or reverie of space. However, as for my working process, I try to reduce my personal narrative to avoid the representation of particular place or emotion.

I aim to establish my own visual language embedded in my work free from formalities. Throughout 2D and 3D, I want the body of work shows its stance as a form to interrelate with space, not as a site-specific installation. It is the imperfect visualisation of how I perceive space around me in a phenomenological interpretation of what I see.
