My contextualisation begins with looking into several links between Mark Rothko and Tacita Dean. They have a strong interest in mythological drama and prehistoric energy. They gaze at time and space in their work with the interconnection between absence and existence, void and eternity, hollowness and passion. In methodology, I have found they are attracted by the process of labourous technique as a language to convey light and colour together. Researching Rothko and Dean is my starting point to seek my voice through my work.
Not only Rothko But also Bachelard, Redon and De Chirico found their voice from their early memory of shelter and stimmung under the influence of philosopher’s mind like Nietsche. In detail, Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space, Water and dreams supports my theoretical understanding how to interpret memory and reverie in phenomenology rather than in personal narrative. Redon inspires me with his methodology to arouse shape or colour beneath the surface while De Chirio shows the metaphysical state of space via his objects which become matter, space, apparition and object at once.
My artwork as an object is influenced more by Lucio Fontana's spatialism than by deconstructing painting of Angela De La Cruz. I aim to compose uncanny variations on plastic modulation, light, shadow and colour in terms of painting, which is triggered by memories of space. It is neither to break the convention nor to create an abstraction. Therefore I aim for my works to have the elastic energy to reach the universe as to grow from their own energy.
