artist statement

My art practice is about dealing with space. My interest lies between painting and object with the modulation of space in object and extending into the surrounding space of it.

Originally, my work was based on acrylic painting, building up space by drawing from my early memory or dream state of spaces. Gradually, I felt the lack of energy in using the dreaming process and have more interest in considering painting as an object, as well as space as a substance of organic form including me, rather than the imagery of a concept. Thus, I am trying to paint on the altered space of an object to find my attachment to the universe. Lucio Fontana tore at the canvas to see something which is an unknown dimension, at the same time Bachelard might call this “the dimension of intimacy”.

In my methodological research, I have repeated the process of canvas making, breaking, painting or drawing using a restricted palette of colours. For my painting process, I have assumed hypothetical light to imagine the different dimensions to alter the given space of the object. So, a practical question in my process is how to see the interplay of space-time in terms of painting in the modulated space. Regarding a canvas as 2D –even though it is actually a 3D form-, breaking and placing canvases, I see a blank paper as if every side of the canvas structure is on a flat surface. It is an empty stage, an empty paper. I then paint on that empty surface.
