I make spatial sculpture derived from furniture and architecture to create the inner landscape of fictional objects. Through observing the structure of space and relations of things around, my art practice has been about dealing with space and objects as a whole structure. In the perception of space as the capacity of emptiness like stage or façade, I examine the possible modulation or reconstruction of space in objects. Then I build their inner/outer-scape by framing objects in space.
Interrogating the language of sculpture and blending it into 2-dimensional disciplines drive my making process. Wood as the key material; I consider the planar surface like a piece of paper, and I cut directly into the surface. Adding and removing compounds from cut-out develop an initial structure until the final form reveals. Physical and technical limitation in the use of material turns to the strategy to simplify the making process by the assembly and joint, playing with the gravity.
My affection towards labour-based process with dexterity is the passage to evoke the nostalgia of shelters in my early memory of space. The process is the actuality to create space, at the same time, forms unreality of dreaming the places I have dwelt. Intimate but unfamiliar, fiction exists there. Then, I question how to translate the fiction in the gap between the inner state of mind and out-world of reality into visualising the relations between space and objects in sculptural realisation.
